One dead and several wounded in Utrecht shooting

A gunman opened fire on a tram in the central Dutch city of Utrecht shooting on 18 Mar 2019 Monday.

As of this writing, at least one person has been killed and several people were wounded in the shooting.

The Police said they had launched a manhunt for the attacker and were investigating the shooting as a possible terrorist incident.

“A shooting occurred on the #24oktoberplein in Utrecht. The incident has been reported at 10.45 hour. Multiple people have been injured. The surrounding area has been cordoned off and we are investigating the matter.” the police tweeted.

The head of the Dutch national counterterrorism service, Pieter-Jaap Aalbersberg, told a press conference that gunfire had erupted “at several locations,” and that “a major police operation” was underway to arrest the gunman.

He added that the terrorism threat level had been raised to the maximum of five in the province of Utrecht, but did not comment on the number of injured or what condition the victims were in.

“Threath level raised to 5, exclusively for the province of utrecht untill 18 hrs. Perpetrator on the run. We cannot rule out terrorist motive. Follow local authorities for instructions.” tweeted Pieter-Jaap Aalbersberg.

Utrecht is a city in the central Netherlands, it’s fourth largest city, and also a large student population and is known for its picturesque canals.
